PARADE PROGRAMME

THE CINDERELLA (FROM ASHES TO ASHA)

Performed by:
NUS Sheares Hall Leader: Chan Yong Heng Ronald Choreographer: Chong Nigel Benedict Chief Float Designer: Lee E Fei Float Engineer: Chen Jiayang Joseph Float Materials Engineer: Dina Mohandas Presented by: Lee Foundation

“The Cinderella” is not about the person but rather the quest “From Ashes to Asha”. Cinderella literally means “of the ashes” and all the waste materials in this junkyard are the “ashes”. “Asha” has a wealth of meanings like happiness, hope, truth and life. Thus, we would like to bring you on a journey from lifelessness into life, much like in the “fairy-tale” Cinderella, where an ordinary pumpkin was transformed into something truly astounding. That is our passion, the rebirth of ordinary forgotten objects, stories and even people.

This rebirth, however, cannot take place without the spirit that empowers us to pursue our passions. It is this pure, indomitable spirit forged in a crucible of trying ordeals that brings all this potential to fruition. This very spirit compels us to soar to the highest heavens and thus can be aptly represented in the idea of flight.

Welcome, to “The Cinderella” where forgotten ashes of disappointment will be reborn and converted into “Asha”.

Group
NUS Sheares Hall has won numerous awards at the annual NUSSU Rag & Flag Day, and this is their second time participating in Chingay Parade. Their dance performance is fully choreographed and performed by full time students from Sheares Hall.

Float
Built and designed solely by full time students from NUS Sheares Hall over a period of three months. It is built mainly with recycled materials, with unique designs and effects. Watch out for the creative moving effects operated by the students themselves. Larger than life pumpkins, ornaments and animals are the main features and key attractions of the float. The float emerged tops at the NUS annual Rag and Flag Day 2007.
