Synopsis:
A re-creation of the joie de vivre , the spirit, colour and festivities celebrated during the Feria de Abril , or the April Fair, an annual event in Seville ( Southern Spain ). The dance presented for Chingay 2007 is called Sevillanas (SEH-VEE-YA-NAS). This is the traditional dance which is danced by everyone, young and old, when they are at the Fair. Female dancers are dressed in bright, colourful, traditional costumes, with ruffles & frills, adorned with head accessories. The dance is sometimes accompanied by the playing of castanets (CAS-TA-NETS) (hand-held percussion instruments), held by dancers, playing out the rhythms as they dance. The item also features a specially recreated structure that is a representation of the grand entrance (known in Spanish, as the ¡®Portada') to the grounds of the April Fair in Seville , Southern Spain . The design is usually inspired by a key monument in the city.
